Pinot Noir from Costco
πΏ About the Varietal: Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir is one of the world's most celebrated and notoriously finicky red wine grapes. Thin-skinned, genetically unstable, and deeply sensitive to its terroir, Pinot Noir demands cool climates and meticulous farming β yet when it finds the right home, it produces wines of breathtaking elegance, complexity, and soul.
π Classic Aromas & Flavors
Pinot Noir is known for its seductive array of red and dark fruit expressions: cherry, raspberry, strawberry, cranberry, and blackberry lead the way. Beyond the fruit, expect earthy, forest-floor notes, wild mushroom, dried rose petal, and violet, along with spice β cinnamon, clove, star anise β and when oak-aged, touches of vanilla, toasted oak, and mocha. The hallmark of a great Pinot Noir is its silky texture, bright acidity, and hauntingly long finish.
π Regional Expressions Around the World
Burgundy, France β The spiritual homeland of Pinot Noir. French Burgundy (Bourgogne) expressions tend to be more restrained and earthy: think red cherry, forest floor, dried herbs, subtle spice, and lean structure with bright acidity. These wines are often described as having a "Burgundian sensibility" β flavor without weight. The appellation hierarchy (Villages, Premier Cru, Grand Cru) matters enormously.
Willamette Valley, Oregon, USA β Oregon's Willamette Valley is arguably the best New World home for Pinot Noir. Influenced by cool Pacific air and diverse volcanic soils, these wines land between Burgundy's restraint and California's opulence. Expect red cherry, plum, earthy forest notes, cranberry, and balanced acidity, with a savory quality that makes them very food-friendly.
California, USA β California Pinot Noir, especially from coastal appellations like Sonoma Coast, Russian River Valley, Monterey, and Santa Barbara, tends toward riper, more lush expressions: darker fruit (blackberry, boysenberry), jammy strawberry, vanilla, mocha, and soft tannins with higher alcohol. The style is often described as more fruit-forward and crowd-pleasing compared to its European counterparts.
New Zealand (Central Otago, Martinborough) β Vibrant and intensely fruited, with ripe cherry, plum, and earthy spice. Central Otago is one of the world's southernmost wine regions, producing robust yet elegant Pinot Noirs with excellent color intensity.
Germany (SpΓ€tburgunder) β Delicate, pale, and hauntingly elegant. German Pinot Noir (SpΓ€tburgunder) from regions like Baden and the Ahr is gaining serious attention, with red berry, silky texture, and mineral precision.
π― Tonight's Tasting: Costco Pinot Noir $10β$20
Tonight's tasting featured four Pinot Noirs β two Kirkland (Costco's private label) and two popular name brands β all priced in the $10β$20 range and purchased at Costco. The wines were tasted completely blind, with all four poured simultaneously so tasters could compare freely. The setting? A gorgeous lakeside evening in Ashburn, Virginia, with a savory accompaniment of baked Brie topped with sautΓ©ed mushrooms, shallots, and garlic on a baguette β a classic Pinot Noir pairing.
Each taster scored the wines across several attributes including color, aroma, taste/structure, and finish, then declared whether they would buy the wine again and under what conditions (home drinking, neighborhood party, gifting, etc.). Scores were totaled across all four tasters to determine the rankings.

π Tasting Notes
Wine #1 opened the evening with a classic, light Burgundian profile. The color was very light, pale ruby β almost rosette-like on the edges, clear and transparent. The nose offered cherry, vanilla, and chocolate, with one taster detecting a subtle chocolate note right away. On the palate, the wine was fruit-forward, light-bodied, and easy-drinking. Tasters noted its very "Pinot-ish" character β smooth, low tannin, good acidity, and a clean but relatively short finish. One taster mentioned it as an ideal spring and summer sipper, even suggesting chilling it slightly. Several tasters agreed the finish was a bit short and the aroma somewhat muted compared to wines later in the tasting. The group noted it was not a powerhouse but a pleasant, approachable Burgundian entry-level Pinot.

π Tasting Notes
Wine #2 was the lightest in color of the evening β even lighter than Wine #1 β showing a very pale, almost rosette-like ruby that was strikingly translucent. On the nose, tasters found licorice, vanilla, and field fruits (wild berries), though a few felt the aromatics were more subtle or less expressive than they hoped. On the palate, the wine showed more personality than it did on the nose β tasters enjoyed the taste more than the smell, describing it as food-forward, dry, very light-bodied, and clean with a lingering, slightly tannic texture that sat on the roof of the mouth. The finish was understated but noticeable. Jeff noted he wasn't getting as much wine to taste as others in the group! Overall, it was seen as a delicious, easy-drinking Oregon Pinot at an outstanding value price point.

π Tasting Notes
Wine #3 was the undisputed standout of the evening β and it wasn't close. From the moment it was poured, tasters noticed immediately that this wine was in a different league. The color was visibly darker than the previous two wines, a deep garnet that several tasters thought bordered on Cabernet Sauvignon territory (one taster even declared "there's gotta be more cab in there"). The aroma was stunning β smoky, berry-rich, with hints of bell pepper, tobacco, vanilla, and dark fruit that jumped out of the glass. Multiple tasters noted they could smell it from a distance. On the palate, the wine was velvety, lush, and intensely flavored: dark cherry, boysenberry, mocha, and toasted oak with soft, well-integrated tannins and a long, memorable finish. Several tasters repeatedly went back for more. Jeff scored it a perfect 20, and Pam gave it her highest score of 18. Even tasters who described themselves as typically favoring lighter wines found themselves won over by Wine #3's complexity and depth. Post-reveal, the group was genuinely impressed β and pleasantly surprised β that America's #1 selling Pinot Noir, available at Costco for under $16, dominated the tasting.

π Tasting Notes
Wine #4, revealed to be the well-known Bread & Butter Pinot Noir, was the most polarizing of the evening β and the lowest scorer. The color was very light, comparable to Wine #2, and one taster compared it favorably to an honest, true Pinot Noir. The nose showed cherry and vanilla right away, with some tasters picking up fruit-forward aromas. On the palate, however, things got more complicated: several tasters noted a metallic, slightly bitter aftertaste that lingered unpleasantly on both sides of the palate. One taster described a "leather cleaner" quality, while others noted an earthy, herbal quality alongside the vanilla. The finish was short and left an unpleasant impression on multiple tasters. Jeff scored it a 10 β calling it "flat" and "unfinished" β and several agreed the finish was the main weakness. One taster said it seemed to have an almost sweet edge compared to the others. Despite landing last, it was noted as a fine occasional house wine and all four tasters said they would buy it again β just at home and casually, rather than bringing it to a party or gifting it. The group was surprised by its last-place finish given its strong retail reputation.

π Why Meiomi Won the Tasting
Meiomi Pinot Noir dominated this blind tasting with a resounding 70 out of 80 possible points β a full 12 points ahead of second-place Kirkland Willamette and 18 points ahead of the bottom wine. Here's why it stood above the rest:
π Depth of Color: Wine #3 was visibly and dramatically darker than every other wine in the lineup. That deep garnet color immediately suggested greater concentration, complexity, and fruit extraction β and the tasters took notice before even taking a sip.
π Outstanding Aroma: The nose on Wine #3 simply leapt out of the glass. Tasters described smoky, berry-rich, tobacco, bell pepper, dark fruit, and vanilla aromas that were far more expressive than the other three wines. Pam, in particular, called out the aroma as the key reason her score jumped to an 18. Jeff could not stop talking about it.
π Complex Palate: On the palate, the Meiomi delivered dark cherry, boysenberry, mocha, toasted oak, and vanilla β a lush, velvety, full-bodied experience that stood in sharp contrast to the lighter, simpler profiles of the other three wines. One taster described it as bordering on Cabernet territory.
π Memorable Finish: Where Wines #1, #2, and #4 all struggled with short or unimpressive finishes, Wine #3 delivered a long, lingering, satisfying close that had multiple tasters going back for more. This was a decisive advantage in the scoring.
π² The Surprise Factor: Post-reveal, the group was genuinely surprised and delighted that America's #1 Pinot Noir brand β available at Costco for under $16 β could dominate a tasting against a respected French Burgundy and two Kirkland/Oregon options. Several tasters who expected to favor the French or Oregon wine found themselves won over by Meiomi's California coastal richness.
π Jeff's Perfect Score: A perfect 20/20 from Jeff, who cited superior performance across every category β color, aroma, taste, structure, and finish β sealed the win emphatically. He noted it as the kind of wine worth cellaring, not just consuming casually. All four tasters agreed they would buy this wine again, with several earmarking it for parties and special occasions.
In summary: Meiomi's rich, coastal California blend of Sonoma, Monterey, and Santa Barbara fruit delivered the kind of complex, expressive, fruit-forward Pinot Noir that wins blind tastings β proving once again that value-priced wines can absolutely punch above their weight when the blend is done right. π·β¨
