Ribeiro Wine Region, Northwest of Spain
From Porto, Portugal, this is a 2 hour drive north through the country to arrive in the small town of A Quinza in the province of Ourense and we stayed in a winery hotel along the river.
The Ribeiro wine region is located in the Galicia province of Spain, specifically in the valleys formed by the Miño, Arnoia, and Avia rivers. It's a Designated Origin (DO) region, meaning it has a regulated production system. Ribeiro is known for its diverse grape varietals, particularly the white grapes Treixadura, Torrontés, and Godello, and a growing selection of red wines made with local grapes. The region's winemaking history dates back to Roman times, with the region also having a significant influence from Benedictine monks who expanded wine production in the 11th-13th centuries.
